Joe Schmitt has been a senior member of the Firm since Phil Beard, his law school roommate and college fraternity brother, asked him to join the Firm in 1962. A portion of his practice is devoted to bankruptcy and workout matters, having represented Debtors, Creditors and Creditors Committees, as well as Bankruptcy Trustees. Joe also practices in the area of real estate, commercial litigation, and estate law. Joe is a past Chairman of the Bankruptcy and Commercial Law Section of the Allegheny County Bar Association. He has lectured frequently on various commercial and insolvency matters, both in continuing legal education programs and programs for lay organizations involved in commercial and insolvency matters. He has an AV rating in Martindale Hubbell and has been listed in The Best Lawyers of America. Joe received his B.A. degree from Pennsylvania State University and his law degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He has also been designated as a Certified Business Bankruptcy Specialist by the American Board of Certification.

Joe and his wife, Nancy, have been married for 40 years and have four grown children who represent diverse vocations, including medicine, architecture and advertising.
